Field Medic: A Musical Odyssey
Kevin Patrick Sullivan, the versatile American musician behind the creative persona Field Medic, celebrates blending various music styles. While primarily a folk artist, he has inspirations from many different genres. This includes lofi indie rock, new wave, and even rap and trap music showing its way into his projects. His musical journey began in 2009. Collaborating first with his brother Sean in the project “Westwood & Willow” and, later with drummer Andrew Skewes-Cox in “Rin Tin Tiger”. In 2013, he embraced the name Field Medic.
Some History
Field Medic’s evolution as an artist is evident in his discography. In 2013 he self-released his first EP under the moniker titled “Crushed Pennies”. The EP featured 6 songs. It serves as the ideal introduction to the folk fusion sound for which he has become known. In 2015, he took the independent route and released his debut album, “light is gone.” These releases, along with some other singles, all paid off in 2017. That’s when he finally gained the attention of the label “Run For Cover Records”. Signing with this record label paved the way for the release of his next album, and my personal favorite, “Songs from the Sunroom,” in November of 2017.
Exploring Field Medic’s Discography
This album really showcases his songwriting prowess and emotional depth. It serves as a compilation, featuring numerous songs that were either self-released before or had never been heard. Because of this it really acts as a great way to show what he’s capable of as an artist. With the opening track “POWERFUL LOVE” being more of a garage rock banger, and slower love songs like “u u u”, he touches on many different styles and emotions. It was a very strong release. “do a little dope” even earned him a feature in Alternative Press’ “20 songs you need to hear this week“.
After “Songs from the Sunroom” came many more releases, and many more highlights. “Fade into the Dawn” (2019) came next, an introspective journey through the complexities of life. Followed by “Floral Prince” (2020), which is more of an invitation to listen to Field Medic’s raw, unfiltered, and intimate creativity.“grow your hair long if you’re wanting to see something you can change” (2022), his subsequent release, was written during a period of significant depression. However, he used it as an opportunity to address the darkness and find healing.
Venturing Beyond Familiar Territories
It all culminates in his latest release, “light is gone 2” (2023). Field Medic takes a daring leap into a new sonic landscape. He veers away from his folk roots and embracing a captivating blend of electronic and multi-track recording. The album radiates with a refreshing spirit of experimentation, marked by shimmering synths and a rhythmic pulse that adds a vibrant dimension to his music. Songs like “TSION” and “iwanthis2last!” exemplify his audacious approach, seamlessly fusing classic Field Medic elements with inventive production flourishes and autotune.
Yet, beneath the electronic sheen, the record delves into poignant reflections on the life of a working artist, touching on isolation and the relentless pursuit of creative expression. In “light is gone 2,” Field Medic’s unbridled enthusiasm for creating music is vividly showcased. He captures the essence of spontaneity and storytelling. It serves as a reminder that the goal isn’t perfection but rather capturing the moment.
“light is gone 2” show’s that Field Medic’s musical exploration extends beyond the confines of folk. He has ventured outside of it numerous times, even under different names. This includes “Death Medic,” an exploration of death metal-inspired music, and “Paper Rose Haiku,” a venture into the world of trap music. “light is gone 2” mirrors the influence of the latter.
A Glimpse into Field Medic’s Future
Fans of Field Medic have an exciting new release to anticipate. Field Medic recently announced his upcoming album, “Dope Girl Chronicles”, an album scheduled for release in December of 2023. The album is supposedly where the aforementioned track “do a little dope” comes from. In that live-recorded track, he playfully announces the album’s release in 2023 (considering this was six years ago), but interestingly, it seems he’s sticking to the idea. So if you weren’t already a fan of the artist, maybe you’ll now feel inclined to check this one out.
Conclusion
In a musical landscape defined by shifting boundaries, Field Medic stands as an artist unafraid to explore the vast expanse of music. From his humble folk beginnings to daring trap-infused experiments, Field Medic’s journey is a testament to the power of authenticity and artistic integrity. His music resonates with life’s myriad experiences, capturing the essence of the human condition. For both established fans and newcomers, Field Medic’s music is an invitation to embark on an extraordinary and unforgettable musical journey.
